Roa’s big bird in Brick Lane – short film

Yes I made this little video about our time with belgian street artist Roa earlier this year. It is a kind of teaser for our documentary about the Brick Lane area. The video quickly went viral with thousands and thousands of loads. Thanks to all the street art blogs and others who embedded it. During the course of the shoot, I realised that Hanbury Street has a rather troubled and bloody history. I allude to some of my findings in the video. Oh there is a wee mistake which I will correct shortly – Altab Ali was killed by racists in 1978 and not 1998. At the time, this was Roa’s biggest piece. I guess he has beaten his own record by now…

This is turning out to be quite a story. It has everything – fundamentalism, scandal, corruption, flouting of election laws. All allegedly of course. Here is a selection from various sources.

On the one side you have Andrew Gilligan – a man who would scrape the depths to get a story about fundamentalists. Then you have Dave Hill, a more circumspect journalist and not one for sensationalism. Then you have the actual protagonists - Helal Abbas and some awful stuff about him; Ken Livingstone and of course the man himself - Lutfur Rahman This blog post here offers an interesting and plausible perspective.
