This is a trailer for a feature documentary about stateless ex-Malaysians in the UK. Malaysians have been duped into trying to stay on in the UK by acquiring British Overseas Citizenship (BOC) status, available to a select group of Malaysians originating from Penang and Malacca. They now have no right to live or work in the UK. Also having lost or renounced their Malaysian citizenship, they are unable to go back to Malaysia. They lead very difficult lives and this feature documentary examines their plight and the developments that led to this bizarre situation.

This is a portrait of a street and an area - as seen by artists, particularly street artists, and others who live and work or even just visit here. I wanted to shoot a social documentary which would frame the street, its life, and the complex web in which it operates. I wanted to hear the area's "official" stories. And of course the other side of those stories.
I started filming in the fall of 2009. Seems a long time ago. And so this little trailer is a quiet announcement that we are serious about the final edit now...Watch this space I guess. Filmed in London, Paris, Berlin and Madrid. Yeah.. Brick Lane is a long street.
Thanks to all the artists. For your participation and most importantly for your art.

Update: This short film was in the Official Selection of the Rushes Soho Shorts Film Festival, London, 2011.
Joe Deane, Joseph Loughborough and Ben Slow paint on Hanbury Street, Brick Lane. Ben and Joe paint a piece called "Ma o Shishu" or mother and child from a photograph I found in a book about photography and its power to change in South Asia. Their piece changed the street. Everyone who passed - young and old, local or tourist - responded very warmly to it. As did the restaurant owner who owns the wall. But there was another hidden story just behind the painting...of destitution and homelessness in London. 21st century London.
Joseph painted with amazing speed and created two striking pieces one of which lasted only a few weeks before someone decided to make it their private property.
This video is part of a larger project on Brick Lane seen through art and artists.

A bird is a creature of flight. It can symbolise freedom. Belgium artist Roa came to Shoreditch, an inner city area of London, which has been home to waves of immigrants over the years, and painted an astonishing bird in about 8 hours in April of 2010. Six Oranges filmed this feat as part of their documentary on Brick Lane and art. This short film is a teaser for that documentary.
